Burgundy 2022 Vintage

THE PROVIDENTIAL

Every early January, like clockwork, we embark on our sacred annual voyage to Burgundy, to sample the latest vintage.

This year, the sense of anticipation was palpable, as 2022 brought not just a sigh of relief but a collective exhale of joy across the region. After years of unforgiving climate crises, the 2022 vintage marks a significant rebound in quantity, allowing winemakers to replenish cellars drained by frost-bitten 2020 and 2021. In the words of many vignerons, 2022 is nothing short of miraculous — escaping widespread frost in April and gifting Burgundy a warm, generous year that revitalized the vines.

Visiting Comte Lafon and Domaine Roulot in Meursault, we witnessed firsthand how the magic of 2022 was materializing in the bottle. The Chardonnays, precise and luminous, showed a rare balance of richness and tension, with their characteristic mineral backbone intact. It’s a vintage that dazzles without excess — wines of depth, yet devoid of heaviness.

In the Côte de Nuits, where Pinot Noir reigns, a quiet revolution is taking place.

From the cellars of Hubert Lignier in Morey-Saint-Denis to Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey-Chambertin, the practice of vendange entire continue to gain favor, and the results are profound. Whether fully destemmed or with a touch of the stem intact, the technique draws out intoxicating floral notes, while adding depth and structure to the wines. The Pinots we tasted here showed not only richness but a seductive charm.

As we walked through the cellars of Château de la Tour, perched above the ancient walls of Clos Vougeot, the energy of 2022 filled the air. These wines, already showed complexity, hint at a vintage that will age with grace and power. At Clos de Tart, we tasted the Pinot Noir’s muscular elegance — powerful but never ponderous, with that signature silkiness that promises a long, luxurious life in the bottle.

There was a distinct shift in the air. Gone are the over-reliance on new oak barrels and the flashy opulence that marked certain vintages of the past. Instead, we found extended aging, subtle wood integration, and a focus on letting the terroir sing. The whispers of 2022 already evoked comparisons to the outstanding 2015 and 2005 vintages — yet the 2022 seems to carry an extra layer of charm, as if Burgundy is exhaling after a long-held breath.

This is Burgundy at its best. The vintage feels like a gift, not just to the winemakers but to all who have waited patiently, year after year, for Burgundy to once again deliver wines that echo with pleasure, elegance, and purity.

We will officially unveil the vintage 2022 at our grand annual tasting in Rosport on November 9th, where we’ll open bottles from the region’s most revered names.

Expect to be swept away by wines that are as generous as they are graceful, see you there
